           Easy runs will be a staple in your running program no matter where you are on your journey. These runs are usually moderate in duration, low intensity, and are done frequently. Easy runs serve as the building blocks for the engine inside of us, which I call the aerobic engine. This engine is responsible for churning out tons of energy for our body to use for running and is improved by running at easier efforts. Placing these sessions into the calendar frequently will compound the effects and lead to big gains in the long term, effectively building a larger aerobic engine. These runs make us well equipped to handle increases in running volume or intensity, as well as increasing efficiency.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           We recommend composing about 80% of your training volume for easy running. The other 20% of the running volume should be made up of high intensity running. This 80/20 type of training, otherwise known as polarized training, has been shown to lead to increased running performance in recreational runners (Muñoz et al.).
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Doing an easy run takes some skill and discipline. The target intensity is, as the name implies, easy. This can be gauged by using the Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) scale, the talk test, among other metrics. RPE should not exceed 4/10. This correlates to a conversational pace, meaning you are able to speak in full sentences without changing the way you breathe. One common mistake that occurs is running too hard on these days (I’m guilty of this too!). We miss out on the purpose of these days when we run too hard. Since this day makes up a large portion of our running, chronic overexertion on these days can lead to excessive fatigue, burnout, and even increase risk of injury. These days should leave us feeling refreshed, not crumbling at the seams. At times, you may even finish an easy run feeling like you didn’t even go out for a run, which would be a good thing.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Use these sessions as an opportunity to practice relaxed running without running sloppy. It’s a great opportunity to try new routes, gear, nutrition strategies, and run with friends. There’s a lot of flexibility within these sessions.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           Drill sessions work on our running form, otherwise known as running mechanics. If you complete a running evaluation with us, you will be given a report of your analysis with full details of important information about your assessment. This information is used to help guide the coaches in choosing a drill protocol that improves the athlete’s running mechanics. Why do we care about running form? Running, just like any other sport, involves form that can be practiced and improved. Abnormalities in running mechanics may be correlated to injury and less-than-optimal running economy. A runner may be proactive about changing this to prevent injury, while others may change their form following an injury as part of their return to run program.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            ﻿
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
      
           These sessions are very short in duration, and are typically done two or three times per week, enduring 6-8 weeks. After this time period, we expect that you have made the relatively permanent changes to your running form.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The point of running form drills is to break down the continuous task of running into smaller parts and practice them. Let it be known that changing a continuous task, such as running, is difficult. Although literature is still mostly inconclusive that part practice translates exactly to the whole task (Fontana et al., 2009), running form drills can help change your preferred movement pattern. Practicing these preferred movement patterns can help promote better habits and reduce the risks related to abnormalities that are identified in your running form.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Your coach may give you certain “cues” to follow while running. These are short commands that help you repeat the motion that is being learned. For example, you may be prompted to “drive your knees forward.” We want you to keep this in mind as you start running again.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           We want to make it clear that there is no one correct way to run, and running form is an overall small piece of the puzzle when it comes to remaining healthy as a runner. In fact, the relationship between running form and running injury varies between studies. Everyone differs
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           drastically in their anatomy, physiology, past experiences, and the environment in which they live and train. All of these factors play a role in what your running form looks like. With that being said, there are certain mechanics or habits that can increase the risk of a running-related injury, which is where our expertise here at Pineries lies.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           Another point to consider is that changing your running form may necessitate a decrease in running volume or intensity as your body adjusts. When running form is changed, the forces placed on our body also change and can shift locations. Since changing your running form shifts load to different areas of the body, we are hesitant to recommend people attempt major running form changes on their own unless they fully understand how that form change will impact every aspect of the kinetic chain.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           We recommend taking extra steps to ensure you are completing these drills with the appropriate form. Using a mirror to watch yourself could be beneficial. You can also have a friend or coach watch you or take slow motion videos to critique your form as well. Lastly, remember the cue that your coach had given to you. Remember that practicing anything that is new can be challenging at first. It’s okay to not master it right away, but perseverance and consistency will help you be successful.

           Simply put, strides are just intervals of faster running and rest. The runner picks up speed and holds it for a specified time or distance, usually less than thirty seconds or 100 meters. The maximal pace can vary, but commonly ranges from 5k pace to mile pace. Another way to think about it is that the max speed reached can be about 80-85% of a sprint, meaning that it is not an all out effort. This is followed by a short rest period, then repeated. There are many places these can be put in your training schedule. It may follow an easy run, precede a workout, be its own session, prime your body the day before a race, and more. Strides are like a multitool, offering a wide array of benefits. Further, they add a lot of bang for your buck. Just a few of these at a time can lead to benefits, without tacking on too much fatigue. The goal of the strides will determine the structure and placement of the session within your calendar.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           There are multiple reasons strides are used for runners of all levels and distances. They offer an opportunity to practice your form while picking up speed, which can help build habits that improve form and economy. For someone new to speed work, they are a great introduction to faster running and may be used to familiarize the body with the demands of faster paces. For runners that we work with who are injured, we use them as a way to test tissue tolerance to higher velocity movement. Strides will also prepare the body’s neuromuscular and metabolic systems for other efforts that involve high demands on these systems. Athletes who practice running at high speeds demonstrate increased performance and increased ability to recover from high-intensity efforts (Stöggl et al., 2017).
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           To summarize, there are multiple uses for strides. They can prepare your body for higher intensity efforts, train your body to run at faster paces, and improve efficiency while running. These are short runs that will appear throughout your training.

           The warm up serves to prepare your body for the work that follows this session. Typical warm up sessions will be short in duration and low intensity. They may include drills that get you up and moving, walking, or running. At the physiological level, the warm up primes the nervous system, increases soft tissue temperature/blood flow, reduces stiffness or soreness, and readies the cardiovascular system for the work ahead. If your coach knows your specific needs, they can assign a warm up that better fits you.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
            
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           What constitutes a warm up to us at Pineries Running Lab? We recommend you follow a few guidelines to ensure your warm up is effective. First, dynamic movement is better than static stretching to achieve the effects stated earlier. Second, the warm up should be completed no longer than 10 minutes prior to the start of the working session, or you may lose the benefits of the warm up (Gutierrez-Coronado et al., 2022). Third, you should tailor your warm up routine to your specific needs. This means paying attention to your body before and during your session. Are there specific areas that feel like they take a while to acclimate to the exercise compared to others? If so, try spending a little more on that muscle group. If everything feels like it takes a long time to get up to speed, you may need to extend the length of your warmup. Open and honest communication will get you to this level!
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
            
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           We should also discern the difference between a dynamic movement and a static movement. A dynamic movement involves activating the muscles as well as moving the joints they control through a range of motion. A static stretch is just putting a muscle on stretch and holding it there. To keep it simple, dynamic means movement, while static means still. There are endless examples of dynamic movements you can use. A common routine will involve small movements before large movements, such as calf raises before skips. Also, it may place activity-specific movements (i.e., jogging) at the end of the warm up.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
            
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           You are likely to see this as part of your routine most days of the week. Just because your calendar may not have a warm up required for that day, you can always feel free to precede your session with some warming up at your discretion.

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           Running is a wonderful activity. It has numerous health benefits including those for our cardiovascular health, mental health, and cartilage and joint health. At the same time, the number of runners that get injured is between 19.4-79.3% of runners in any given year, which ends up being a minimum of 9.12 million people per year (Van Gent et al 2007).

            So how can we maximize the health benefits of running without getting injured? It ultimately comes down to matching your running demands (frequency/duration/intensity of running) with your physical status (strength/mobility/mechanics). Some of the factors within running demands include training habits, types of surfaces you’re running on, and footwear. Your physical status will depend on any past medical history, your strength and mobility, and the cornerstones of recovery, which include nutrition, hydration, and overall stress levels.

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

           Another significant factor in running demands is your running mechanics and running form. Certain types of running gait cycles can place excess stress, often what is called excessive breaking forces, on specific tissues and predispose you to injury. If you want to run healthy and avoid running injuries, addressing your running form is a modifiable factor that has been shown to be able to decrease excess force through your body and therefore reduce your risk of injuries.

           3D running analysis can play a crucial role in identifying potential injury risks early on. By precisely tracking joint angles and running stride parameters, this technology can detect subtle imbalances that can increase loading over tissues that are susceptible to injury. I find this particularly useful in working with runners with recurrent injuries, where a 3D running gait analysis can identify patterns of movement that put the injured tissue under excess stress.

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Not only do you want to assess your running form, but you want to appropriately change it. 3D running gait analysis allows you to get real-time feedback to retrain your movement and change where the stresses are applied to your body when you run. In fact, a study done in 2018 showed that runners who received gait retraining based on their 3D running gait analysis had lower peak breaking forces after a few gait retraining sessions (Napier et al 2018). Decreasing these stresses can play a role in injury reduction and your ability to remain consistent in your running.

So, as more peoples are heading outside to exercise there are some things to keep in mind to assist with decreasing risk for injury.
         &#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          One way to assist to decrease risk of injury is to have a good warm up. Targeting the muscle that will be utilized during the exercise in a light manor prior to exercise is a good option. This will allow the muscle to warm up and increase blood flow. If someone would like to go running, some warmup exercises may be doing body weight squats, lunges, and calf raises. Then when running start slow and gradually increase your speed.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Another way to assist to decrease injury early in the spring is avoiding areas with snow and ice. However, this is not always possible, thus using shoes with proper tread and possibly putting something on shoes to increase traction. There are some options that slip over your shoes that either have spikes or metal rings to assist to decrease the risk for falls.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          If someone has not been exercising much over the winter and would like to get into the exercise of their choice, it is best to start with less intensity and shorter duration and gradually progress. This will allow your body to build tolerance to the activities over time. This will allow your muscle and tendons to adapt to the demands of the exercise. Then it is also important to incorporate rest days to allow your body to repair itself.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          These are just a few ways to assist to decrease the risk for injury as spring is coming around.

          I often see individuals come into physical therapy due to injuries after a fall. So, while we are still waiting for the snow and ice to melt, here are some things we can do to prevent falls for the season.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          I have said this in the past, but wearing good shoes is important to assist with preventing falls. There are shoes with the sole made primarily of foam and I have personally found that these can be very slick. This is also true for some dress shoes. Thus, having a pair of shoes with a good rubber sole can assist to prevent falls especially with snow and ice.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Watch where you step. Whether it be outside with snow and ice, or in the house or work, watching where your foot is going can assist to decrease your risk of falls. If you find yourself in a place where it is slick, taking small slow steps and having something sturdy to hold onto can assist to decrease your risk for falls.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          For some their balance is already impaired and maybe a fall has already occurred. If this is the case, I often work with individuals to improve their balance. I use functional tests to see where the individual is currently at with balance. Based on their score I can see if they are statistically at a greater risk for having a fall. Then after working together for a while, we will do those tests again to see what progress has been made.
         &#xD;

         When setting up Christmas decorations this is often completed in late November or early December. During these times, there is often no snow and ice. So, when setting them up it is a safer time of year to be climbing on a ladder or the roof to place the decorations. However, when the holidays are finished there is likely going to be snow and ice for an extended period of time. If trying to take the decorations down then, it increases the risk for falls. Thus, it is good looking for a safer option.
         &#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          One way to assist to prevent falls is by waiting to take them down later in the year when the snow and ice melts. While some may not want to wait that long to take them down, it is easier to wait to take them down than to rehab an injury after a fall. Another option is to hire this work out. While there is a cost to having someone come and take down the lights, it is again cheaper than going through the rehab process of an injury.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          If you insist on taking down the decorations right after the holidays, take a few precautions when doing so. Things to keep in mind are making sure the ladder is set up so it cannot slip, do not rush the process, and take the decorations down with another person or let someone know you are taking them down so if something does happen, they can be there to assist you.
         &#xD;

         As the seasons are beginning to change again, considerations to maintain safety in the winter should be taken.
         &#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          There are many ways to clear snow. Options are shoveling, snow blower, ATV, truck, or hiring it out. When deciding on an option one should look at their personal ability and assess which one makes the most sense for them. If shoveling is the right option for you, keeping the shovel close to the body, bending at the knees, and not twisting the back while lifting can reduce the risk of injuries. When shoveling, taking breaks as needed can assist to decrease injury risks. As when the body starts to become fatigued it is easier to injure oneself as muscles used to stabilize the body may not do their job as well.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Another area to be aware of is using good foot wear. Most boots and some shoes should provide decent traction. However if you have an office job that requires dressier shoes these can have a harder sole that decreases traction. Thus wearing boots to work and then changing them at work can assist to decrease falls risk. Also it can keep your shoes looking better as it prevents salt and dirt from getting on them.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;

         The fall is a great time of the year, however it is short lived. Once the leaves start to change colors they start to fall soon after. This creates work for those of us who have to clean up those leaves. There are a few things to be aware of when cleaning up those leaves to stay safe.  
         &#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          When it comes to taking care of leaves in the yard some bag up leaves, some mulch them, and others may rake them. After bagging leaves on a mower, lifting the bags close to the body will assist to decrease the pressure on the back. Also, when lifting try to avoid lifting and twisting as the combined movement can increase risk for back injuries.  
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Raking leaves takes time and effort. Keeping the rake close to the body can assist to decrease strain on the shoulders and back. Raking can take multiple hours, so it is good to take breaks when becoming fatigued as when fatigued it is easier to injure oneself.  
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Leaves are not just on the ground; they are also on the roof of the house and collect in gutters. Injuries can occur from falling off the ladder or from the roof. So, when placing a ladder, make sure that it is securely placed and if needed have someone hold the ladder steady when climbing it. If climbing on the roof is needed, look for a time when the roof is dry to decrease the risk for slipping.  
         &#xD;

         The fall is a great time of the year as the weather starts to cool off and the leaves start to change colors. The cooler weather can make it so exercise outside is more comfortable. While it can be more comfortable, there are some things to think about when exercising during the fall.  
         &#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Many individuals like to continue to exercise outside as it gets later into the year. However later in the year there is less day light. When exercise takes place at night or low light situations, it is harder for cars and others to see. A good option would be to change an exercise routine to be completed during daylight hours or join a gym. However, these options are not always desired. Thus, another option is to either use reflective clothing or lights. An option I like to use are running belts that have a light on them as they can easily be strapped on and provide elimination making it easier for others to see you. I like running belts as it also is a place to store my phone when running or biking. These are good as it keeps the phone close to the body and minimizes the phone from bouncing.  
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Another means of exercise in the fall is hiking. A personal favorite place to go hiking is Devils Lake in Baraboo. At Devils Lake there are a lot of rocks and roots that can cause a fall or roll an ankle. Wearing proper footwear can assist to prevent these from happening. Wearing hiking boots that provide adequate ankle support can assist to prevent or minimize ankle sprains. Another aspect to look for in hiking boots is good tread on them as this can assist to decrease the risk for falls. A walking stick can also assist to decreasing falls as it provides another point of contact with the ground.  
         &#xD;

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

          The fall is a favorite season for many, however like every season it can present with its own set of challenges. However, the challenges can be minimized by taking precautions beforehand.

         Backpacks can be a great tool for carrying items to and from school, but they also have the potential to cause injury. Areas at risk for injury are the neck, shoulders, and back. By understanding how to choose a backpack and how to wear it properly we can decrease our risk of injury!

          When choosing a backpack, look for one with wide padded shoulder straps. This helps distribute weight evenly across the shoulders, unlike narrow straps focus weight onto a smaller area which can increase the likelihood of causing injury. An example of a backpack with narrow straps are sack-packs.

          Placing heavier objects closer to the body can also assist to decrease chance for injury. The farther away the weight is positioned from the body, the more the body must work to keep up right. An example of this could be having textbooks being closest to the back and having an extra pair of socks farther from the back.
         &#xD;

  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Another idea is to try to pack light. This can be done by getting homework done at school, so books do not need to be taken home. If just certain pages of a book are needed, the student can take pictures of the pages needed on their phone instead of bringing the entire book to and from school. My personal favorite way to pack light is to ask the teacher for no homework, you know not because you don’t want to do homework, but to protect your shoulders and back &amp;#55357;&amp;#56841;
         &#xD;

          The backpack can be a great tool for carrying items to and from school, but it also has the potential to cause injury. By understanding how you can choose a backpack that is right for your child's needs, and how they should wear it properly we can decrease their risk of injury! Consider these tips when looking into purchasing a new backpack this school year.

         One of my favorite exercises for the elderly. Sit to stand. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          While this is a fairly simple exercise, there are many reasons this is one of my favorites and probably the exercise I give to patients the most often. First, it is a functional exercise. Throughout every day we are going from sitting to standing whether from the kitchen table, a car, the bed, or the couch. It is a movement we complete often, thus it is a movement that we should strive to be good at. Second, going from sitting to standing targets some of the largest muscle groups in the body. It is a great exercise as the individual is exercising many muscles and not just 1 or 2. Third, it can be set up to be a fairly safe exercise for most ability levels. As seen in the picture there is a counter in front of me where I can use my hands for balance if needed or to use to assist me to stand up. Then lastly, I like it as the exercise can be made more difficult based on the individual ability. One way this can be done is by giving the individual weight to hold onto. This makes it so the muscles have to work harder and assist to build strength. 
         &#xD;

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          These are just a few of the reasons sit to stands are one of my favorite exercises to give to patients. I hope these tips helped you or a loved one.

         Living independently can be very important to some, however the possibility of falls can cause fear for the individual or for loved ones. So, what are some ways that can help to prevent falls? Using the correct assistive device like a walker or a cane can be very beneficial to prevent falls. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Which type of assistive devices an individual should use is variable and depends on many factors like how much their balance is impaired, their upper body strength, medical conditions like Parkinson's disease, complications with either one or both legs, or even an arm, and many more. While there are many types of assistive devices, the most common ones I have seen in the clinic are walkers with two wheels in the front or a cane. With the proper assistive device an individual may feel more confident when walking, they may be able to walk farther, and decrease their falls risk. Sometimes individuals would benefit from having handrails in their home. These can be beneficial, particularly in the bathroom. As it can help individuals get up and down from the toilet and access the shower or bathtub. Having an extra point of contact can decrease the risk for falls. 
         &#xD;

  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;

         Many individuals want to live in their home independently for as long as possible. However, with doing so, there can be increased risk for falls. Falls can cause injury and some individuals are home alone and if they do fall it may take hours or days before someone finds them. That is why it is important to prevent falls as much as possible. There are numerous ways to decrease the risk for falls in the home. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Starting with what people walk on in their home, rugs can increase the risk for falls in the home. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          They create uneven surfaces on the ground which can get caught on the individual’s assistive device or their toes and cause them to fall. Therefore, it may be a good idea to remove rugs from a home so walking surfaces are as smooth as possible. This also goes for transition areas like the kitchen to living room, as these places can go from wood flooring to carpet. If possible, it may be a good idea to have flooring that is the same throughout the house. If not replacing flooring, finding products that decrease the chance of having their foot or assistive device from getting caught.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          As individuals get older, eyesight often decreases. This increases the importance of having even and adequate lighting throughout the house. Having good lighting can assist with seeing if objects are laying on the ground. Having even lighting throughout the house can also assist with decreasing shadows within the home. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          These are just a few ways a house can be set up to decrease falls risk and improve someone’s independence as they get older or if they have other medical conditions that decrease their balance.

  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
